#004 Overcoming Loneliness

Ah, divorce. It's like a vacation that never ends—an all-expenses-paid trip to the land of loneliness. And if you're a man over 40 going through a divorce, congratulations! You've hit the jackpot—loneliness, despair, and your very own mid-life crisis all bundled up in one enticing package. But fear not, dear divorced men, for I am here to offer you some "helpful" tips to overcome your newfound loneliness.

  1. Embrace Your Inner Couch Potato: What better way to combat loneliness than by becoming one with your couch? Picture this: you, a bag of chips, and a never-ending stream of mind-numbing reality TV shows. Who needs human connection when you can lose yourself in the lives of strangers on the small screen? Just remember, loneliness is a state of mind, and the only company you truly need is your remote control.  Check those batteries frequently - you don't want to get up too often!  But, this can't be your reality forever!

2. Become a Cat Whisperer: If you thought dogs were man's best friend, think again. I hear cats are the true companions of divorced men after 40. With their indifference, judgmental glares, and frequent hairballs, cats are the perfect embodiment of post-divorce life. Plus, they won't ask you about your ex, judge your wardrobe choices, or complain about your less-than-healthy eating habits. It's a win-win! But a disclaimer - I'm a dog guy, but who knows?  My kids still despise my collection of Crocs.

3. Master the Art of Talking to Yourself: Who needs a therapist when you have your own internal dialogue? Engaging in deep conversations with yourself is not only socially acceptable but also a great way to practice your public speaking skills. And who knows, maybe one day you'll find someone who's as interested in your theories on the meaning of life as you are.  The odds of telling yourself to shut up are rare.  Until then, embrace the solitude and make the most of your newfound self-awareness. Unless you really need a therapist because you're really going down a rabbit hole - then a professional is definitely needed.

4. Embrace Your Inner Chef: They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So why not treat yourself to a culinary journey of self-discovery? Experiment with exotic spices, perfect your secret mac and cheese recipe and learn to cook for one like a pro. After all, who needs a partner when you can have a fridge full of leftovers? My mantra was a ten-pack of Twinkies and about halfway through - admitting to myself that it was a bad idea as I washed them back with some milk.  And don't judge, Twinkies is its own food group!  Healthy as hell.

5. Embrace Your Inner King of Your Castle: Divorced men after 40, this is your time to shine! Embrace the freedom to decorate your home however you please. Transform your living room into a gaming den, cover every surface with Star Wars memorabilia, or create a shrine to your favorite metal or old-school band - the possibilities are endless.  My choice was Earth, Wind, and Fire.  And remember, the more eclectic your tastes, the slimmer your chances of finding a new love interest. Embrace the solitude, my friends.

Divorce and loneliness may seem like an unbeatable pair, a double whammy that leaves you feeling like a fish out of water in the vast ocean of life. But fear not, dear divorced men after 40, for you have all the tools you need to overcome this temporary setback. Embrace your inner couch potato, converse with your feline friends, perfect your cooking skills, and decorate your castle to your heart's content. As ridiculous as these tips may sound (and they really are), they serve as a reminder that life after divorce can be as fulfilling and joyous as you make it.  You ultimately have the control.  So go forth, my lonely men, and embrace the absurdity of it all. After all, happiness is just a bag of Cheetos and a sarcastic blog post away.  Orange fingertips are not overrated!

Happy Healing...

David
